** FRIDAY

Live Painting - by Debra Drexler

From the islands of Hawaii to the island of Manhattan, "Postcard from Paradise Past" is a live painting event with imagery which explores the complex dynamics between the past and the present, the influence of colonialism and the traditions of the Western and non-Western worlds.

Pressure/Release

This performance is a collaboration between artists Cat Del Buono, Antonia Wright, and Ruben Millares. Both will be in the lobby of the Gershwin Hotel where they will blow up more than 500 balloons non-stop, coming close to passing out a number of times. As they tediously blow them up one by one, they become exhausted and engulfed by the very balloons they create. They will also invite viewers to join in and help blow up balloons. Once the balloons fill the area, they will start popping each one, freeing themselves from the smothering balloons and all the effort and struggle that was put into them. The joy from this release erases all the previous pain and struggle for both performers and viewers.

Giants in the City

A Public Art project curated by Miami-based artist Alejandro Mendoza "and considered “a colossal paradigm of the urban nomad.” Each work is constructed of vinyl, nylon, or plastic that can be inflated and deflated in minutes - appropriately fast, transitory pieces for a placed blessed, or cursed, with frenetic impatience and few markers of the past. These sculptures will be placed in front of the Gershwin Hotel, inspiring passers-by and attendees o the fair to engage in the art and culture that PooL Art Fair provides.
On going – March 5, 6 & 7 2010 - (pending DOT approval)

"Control Panel" sound installation by Andrew Mount & Mark Grimm

‘Control Panel’ is an interactive sound installation which aims to question the processes of participation in art. ‘Control Panel’ uses custom built open source software that receives text messages, and uses them to manipulate the sound installation. Through real time interaction with popular and accessible technologies, ‘Control Panel’ asks how an audience participates or engages in art, and if participants are able to assume the role of the artist. Audiences will be given directions to interact with the work through texting messaging.

The Curiosity Room

is an experimental presentation of nine artists sharing his/ her work as a solo exhibition. The show includes artwork by Toni Brogan, Rachael Gorchov, Thom Lussier, M.P. Landis, Sean Mount, Stavros G. Pavlides, Michael Sanzone, Tyrome Tripoli, Lynda White and a special performance piece by Dana Leigh Snyder and Margret Seema Takyar.
This exhibition draws inspiration from the ‘curiosities’ Rembrandt van Rijn placed such importance, obsessively accumulating artifacts, drawings and rarities for his extensive collection; the title, of course, also pays homage to Albertus Seba’s renowned book The Cabinet of Natural Curiosities that has continued to influence the work of artists since being published in the 18th century. In its essence, The Curiosity Room is a celebration of the creation of unique objects of art, including painting, photography, sculpture and mixed media and the individuals who appreciate them.
